Play It Again Sam!

No matter what sport your team plays if you can stick with them through some of the most trying, testing and dismal times then your worth your weight in gold to them.

Every Salford supporter knew it was going to be another very challenging afternoon against St.Helens. As I write this match report the best bit will come right at the end. The Red Devils never really looked like scoring throughout the match but got a chance when young winger Sam Hill backed himself to try something different. Despite Salford’s turmoil in 2025 the young players that are learning on the job keep the flame burning bright to give us a beacon of hope.

Chris Hill returned to the starting lineup for the home side after a significant time out injured. Despite being named in the squad Sam Stone and Joe Mellor were both absent. Shane Wright returned in the second row with Toby Warren moving to centre.

The Red Devils managed just a solitary set of six in the opening fifteen minutes and this allowed St.Helens to move swiftly into control. Tries from Curtis Sironen, Kyle Feldt and Alex Walmersley along with a procession of penalties left Salford with a mountain to climb.

Sam Hill and Nathan Connell combined brilliantly to burst through the Saints defence and this was Salford’s only highlight of the first half. Feldt grabbed his second try to send the visitors in with a 0-20 lead at halftime.

Despite the visitors being in a comfortable lead the match still had plenty of needle. The Salford players refused to lie down with Harvey Wilson a tireless worker in defence but his break through and turn of pace got the home supporters on their feet. If it rains these days it tends to pour on Salford. Those little breaks don’t materialise. Referee James Vella pulled the Devils up for a forward pass.

Four more unanswered tries took Saints out of sight into a 0-40 lead.

Kai Morgan was playing at hooker and he’d done it tough in the middle all afternoon. Morgan went off late on holding his arm which will be another worry for Paul Rowley.

Feldt added his fourth try of the afternoon five minutes from time.

Salford forced a drop out with two minutes to go and to warm our hearts Sam Hill produced something special. Hill received the ball and chipped over the Saints defence. He raced through to regather his own kick. The ball went left and Hill finished superbly in the corner for his first try for Salford. It’s a moment he’ll never forget and one he really deserved.

The Red Devils may be light on experience at the moment but the young players in the side could form the nucleus of something special to rebuild from.

Paul Rowley spoke of Sam Stone after the match and it looks like the Australian forward may of played his last game for Salford. If reports are true it could be another turbulent week leading up to our next game against Hull FC in a weeks time. Rowley will keep fighting his corner and with an assistant like Kurt Haggerty alongside him who he trusts with everything the Red Devils won’t be throwing any towels in.
